- During the past 40 years, obesity rates for children age 6 -11 nearly tripled from 5% to 14% and more than tripled for adolescents age 12 - 19 from 5% to 17.1%.

- Approximately 13 million (1 in 3) U.S. children and adolescents are obese, with a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile. 
   (Obesity is defined as body mass index (BMI) at or above the 95th percentile of the 2000 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention BMI-for-age growth charts). 

- Childhood obesity health expenses are estimated at $14 billion annually.

- 61% of obese young people already have at least one additional health risk factor such as high blood pressure, diabetes or cholesterol. 

- Overweight adolescents often become overweight adults, with an increased risk for a wide variety of poor health outcomes including:
  diabetes, stroke, heart disease, arthritis, and certain cancers.

- Between 1990 & 2007 the price of a two-liter bottle of Coca-Cola fell 34.89% and the price of fruit & vegetables rose 17% percent between 1997 & 2003.
 
  An increase that some studies have linked to higher BMI in American children and
adolescents.
